- Each character can purchase up to seven bag slots in the bank. The cost of the bag slots in the bank increases with each extra slot purchased, starting at 10, then increasing to 1, then 10, then 25, then 25, then 25, then 25, for a total of 111 10 for all seven slots.
- Bag Vendors (sometimes called Bag Merchant) are NPC vendors that sell bags ranging in size typically from 6 to 12 slots. Bags that can't be purchased from vendors are typically crafted, if not quest rewards. 1 Vendors 2 Sells 2.1 In Burning Crusade 2.2 In Wrath of the Lich King 2.3 In Cataclysm Dawn Radue in Stormwind City IshaqBags in Uldum Fabian Lanzonelli.
My assumption is the backpack is more than just a container and currency holder. The backpack likely acts as an anchor for the inventory. That is to say, to access any other slot in the other packs, from a code perspective, you start at the backpack and use it to find where you need to go. Imagine the bags like a tree and the backpack is the root. The 7.3.5 PTR has just gone live and if you've attached an Authenticator to your account, one of the first things you'll notice is you have 4 extra Bag slots in your base bag! The upgrade to the backpack will be done automatically if you have an Authenticator attached to your Battle.Net account. Collectors rejoice! In patch 7.3.5, Blizzard has added a way to get four more backpack slots so you can happily continue to squirrel away. The new backpack slots are free, but there is a catch - you'll need to beef up security on your account.
The backpack is the initial storage container for carrying items that all Player characters get at the start of the game. It occupies the right-most bagslot on the interface bar.
The amount of money (, , or ) the character possesses is shown at the bottom right of the backpack window.Several additional currencies, such as Darkmoon Prize Tickets and Timewarped Badges, can be set to be displayed at the currency window.
The backpack has 16 slots by default, though vulpera characters have access to 8 additional slots for a total of 24 thanks to their [Alpaca Saddlebags]racial trait. The backpack can be expanded with 4 extra slots, for a total of 20 slots (28 for vulpera), by adding an authenticator to the account.
Technical difficulties
When asked in 2011 Ask the Devs about increasing the size of the backpack or replacing it, the answer given was that it was technically challenging due to the manner in which the slot was coded and could cause major breaks in the game (such as loss of players' gear).[1] This is because the backpack is 'hard-coded' into the game, making any modification a very risky proposition. This was later expounded upon during the BlizzCon 2015 Engineering Community Amphitheater Discussion:

This was directly contradicted the following BlizzCon 2016 during the World of Warcraft Q&A panel. According to Lead Game Designer Matt Goss, the difficulty of upgrading the backpack had been 'almost a myth' that even the design team themselves had believed. The reality is that it actually isn't nearly as difficult and hopefully will be 'Soon'.[2]
During BlizzCon 2017, it was announced that the number of slots could be increased by adding an authenticator to one's account. How many slots would be added was not mentioned at that time but, when the first PTR build for patch 7.3.5 became available, it would turn out to be four.
Additional notes
- By default, you can press 'Shift-B' to open and close your backpack. While 'B' opens all your bags.
- You can also close all open bag windows, including the backpack, by clicking its icon.
- You cannot move, delete, replace, or store your backpack.

Whether or not Blizzard will ever allow World of Warcraft players to increase the size of their basic backpack has been a lingering question for years — almost as long as World of Warcraft itself has been existed. There was a long-standing rumor that the backpack could never be increased due to issues with the game’s coding. The implication seemed to be that everything would break if they messed with the backpack.

However, when the question came up again during this year’s WoW Q&A at BlizzCon, the developers had a surprising new answer: Yes, they will increase the size of the backpack. The caveat? The backpack’s increased size will be a reward for players who attach an authenticator to their account. Additional storage can be yours for the low, low price of an extra layer of account security.

Update:The patch 7.3.5 PTR went live today and includes the backpack upgrade. Anyone with an authenticator automatically gets four additional bag slots. While there’s no word on when it will go live, at least we won’t be waiting until Battle for Azeroth.

This isn’t the first time World of Warcraft has provided incentives for using an authenticator. All the way back in 2009, players who used an authenticator all received the Core Hound Pup pet. Back then, players had to purchase a keyfob authenticator from the Blizzard Store to benefit from two-factor security on their account. However, in the era of smartphones, the authenticator now comes in the form of a free app.
